Socialization Key to Overall Health

By Thom Braun

Socialization Key to Overall HealthResearch and studies continue to tout the im-portance of socialization, especially for older adults. In fact, a recent report by researchers from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School found that loneliness can accelerate cognitive decline.

As we age, our social circle may become smaller. Whether due to physical limitations or caring for a spouse with an illness, many factors can contribute to increased isolation.

The aforementioned study revealed that participants who reported loneliness experienced a 20 percent faster cognitive decline that their peers. The result held true regardless of factors such as demographics, socioeconomic status and the presence of other debilitating health conditions.

With socialization playing such a vital role in healthy aging, it’s important for seniors to continue leading active, vibrant lives.

Here a few suggestions for remaining socially connected:

Embrace Technology
With families and friends living further apart than previous generations, technology offers the perfect tool to bridge the gap. Libraries offer computer classes that can help older adults learn how to email their loved ones. It’s a great technique for keeping in touch with grandchildren and great-grands. Video calling programs such as Skype also provide ways to stay connected.

Join a Senior Center
According to AARP, 1 million older adults across the nation take part in senior center services. This offers older adults a wealth of socialization opportunities. Located in most cities and towns, senior centers offer a wide range of programs and classes such as nutrition, fitness and wellness checks. Often, a senior center will provide transportation to and from the center.

Consider Moving to a
Retirement Community
Social isolation can lead to depression, impacting one’s overall health. “A Review of Social Isolation” found that 43 percent of older adults living at home reported that they “lack a sense of belonging socially, have limited engagement with others and a minimal number of social contacts, and are deficient in fulfilling and quality relationships”.

At communities such as The Carlisle, a luxury retirement community in North Naples, residents find their social circles expand ten-fold both within the community as well as the community-at-large. Without day-to-day responsibilities of home maintenance or cooking, they now have the time to pursue new interests or rediscover a passion.

And at The Carlisle, there is always something to do and someone to do it with. Even residents who enjoy quiet time alone, like knowing there are friendly neighbors available to join them for dinner in our onsite restaurant or that they can simply head to our Living Room to join fellow residents for lively concert or special celebration.

Adopt a Pet
Pets have been proven to reduce stress, lower blood pressure and increase social interaction. When walking a dog, one often encounters other dog lovers and finds dog parks are wonderful ways to meet others. Pet rescue organizations can be a resource for older adults looking to adopt a pet. And, senior living communities are often pet-friendly with the maintenance-free lifestyle allowing seniors more time to have fun with their pets.

The benefits of remaining socially integrated are tremendous. Socialization can contribute to one’s psychological and physical wellness. As a Carlisle resident pointed out, “It’s critical that we continue being a part of the mainstream of life even as we age”.
