Hair Loss is an Emotional Experience! What You Can Do

Hair Loss can be very traumatic for men and women. Even though many more men are affected by hair loss, women have the greatest emotional upset over thinning hair. Men usually can start to see hair loss in their twenties. It can be very insidious or can progress quite quickly. Women typically see the thinning of hair later in life than men.

I’m sure you’re asking yourself, so what causes hair loss. The main culprit is DHT, which stands for (dihydrotestosterone). DHT is a hormone that has been linked to hair loss in both men and women.

Your options to reduce, prevent, and in many cases, restore hair loss

1. Medication can be taken in pill form. The most popular are Propecia and Finasteride. Men usually take 1 MG per day. Women normally don’t use Propecia due to many side effects. If women use Finasteride, they usually need 2.5 MG per day, but many side effects usually prevent women from using these categories of medication, one main side effect is birth defects.

2. Minoxidil is a topical solution placed on the scalp that can have a positive benefit. It is the only FDA approved topical to help reduce hair loss. It can be used by both men and women.

3. PRP scalp injections are usually done once a month for 4 or 5 treatments. This is one of the best options to reduce and, many times, restore lost hair. Platelet Rich Plasma, or also known as “PRP” is an injectable treatment, whereby a person’s own blood is used. Dependent on the type of treatment, a fraction of blood (30cc-60cc) is drawn from the individual patient into a syringe. This is a relatively small amount compared to a blood donation that removes 500cc. The blood is spun down in a special centrifuge to separate its components (Red Blood Cells, Platelet Rich Plasma, and Plasma. The platelet-rich plasma is first separated, then activated when injected, to allow the release of growth factors, which in turn amplifies the healing process. Platelets are very small cells in your blood that, when concentrated, release a number of enzymes and growth factors. PRP, used for hair restoration, can stimulate follicles that are still alive but only producing short fine hairs to awaken and start to generate healthy hair again. PRP’S SAFETY has been established for over 20 years for its wound healing properties, and its proven effectiveness has extended across multiple medical specialties, including cardiovascular surgery, orthopedics, sports medicine, podiatry, neurosurgery, dental and maxillofacial surgery.

4. Low-Level Laser Light Therapy in the range of 670 nm and 650 nm. Wavelength frequency. This is a 30-minute treatment given twice per week between the PRP treatments.

5. Hair Transplants It is important to remember that a hair transplant does not stop the thinning of the hair nor does it stop hair loss it only moves the existing ever-decreasing hair you have to a different location. For some men, this is an option that is chosen, but costly, with some downtime. Even with a hair transplant, it would be prudent to add PRP, Laser Light therapy with Minoxidil topical treatments.

At our facility, we have the best PRP processing system that provides the highest concentration of PRP, along with a 670 nm frequency medical grade machine with 240 laser diodes and a 650 nm frequency medical grade machine with 190 laser diodes, which we use to treat thinning hair.

When combining PRP treatments with twice a week laser light treatment, and Minoxidil, we have achieved excellent results.

If you are experiencing thinning hair or hair loss, don’t wait to start a treatment. The longer you wait, the less effective the treatments become. By the time a person sees that they are thinning, they may have already had a 30 to 40% of the hair follicles in a thinning condition. If a person has been bald for a number of years with no fine hairs on their head, the hair follicles have already died, and it is too late to start treatment. Any fine hairs on the scalp mean the follicle is still alive and may be treated. There are no treatments that will create a new hair follicle. You must start the procedure before the hair follicle dies.
