Fall Prevention in the Elderly

Fall Prevention in the ElderlyIf you have an elderly parent or grandparent in your family, you may be concerned with their risk for falls. Each year, 1 out of 3 adults age 65 and over falls. The results from a fall can be minor, such as bruising and abrasions, to severe injuries, such as hip fractures and head trauma. Families may not be aware that the severe injuries resulting from falls are the leading cause of injury death in the elderly. It is important for family and caregivers to understand that even older people who appear to be strong can fall. Falling is a very real threat to their ability to live alone.

Causes of Falls
The normal changes of aging, like poor eyesight and hearing, as well as conditions like osteoporosis can increase the risk of a fall. If the person is taking more than 4 medications or has had their medications changed within the past 2 weeks, they are more likely to fall. Studies have shown that if they have had a fall in the past, that 60% go on to have another fall. Environmental causes involve poor lighting, inadequate footwear, throw rugs, and clutter in pathways. Pets can also pose issues.

Prevention of Falls
Be sure the home is as safe as possible. Wear shoes with nonskid soles. Ensure that the home is well lit. Use nightlights in bathrooms and halls. If stairs are in the home, install handrails on either side. Remove throw rugs and tack down any loose edges of carpet. Install grab bars in bathtubs, showers, and toilet areas. Do not use step stools or ladders. If the family member is persistent in using them, consider removing them from the home. Schedule vision and hearing checks annually.  If their physician wants them to use a cane or walker, make sure they learn how to use it correctly and use it all the time.

What Can Family Do?
Check your family member’s home for potential dangers that could cause a fall. Take them for a walk to actually see how stable they are, paying attention to gait and balance. Actually question them about falls and dizziness. Often, they will not offer this information to you freely. Don’t let your loved one be a victim to a life changing fall. Understand the causes of falls and measures to put in place to prevent them. By doing this, you can help your loved one spend their final years in a healthy, safe environment.
