Allison and her husband recently moved to Naples from DC. She is volunteering with the non-profit Stroke Recovery Foundation. While there are many charity events in SWFL, none are focused on Stroke.
Allison will provide a personal look at the overwhelming challenges of a brain stem stroke, the painstaking process of relearning everything, the meaning of patience and the responsibilities that fall to a loving husband who wants the best possible treatment for his wife.
Sharing from her memoir, Out of the Darkness, Allison will discuss her stroke and the rare Locked-In Syndrome she experienced, and her miraculous recovery, despite enormous odds. It is truly times like these that make you wonder about the meaning of life and why difficult times are often imposed on those that seem to deserve it the least.
One weekend in the fall of 2010, Allison was a woman engaged in a full time career, my family and the challenges of daily life. Then over what should have been a normal day, her life radically changed.
Following her massive stroke, Allison found the will and determination to fight for her life and independence. “It’s about what you learn about yourself when faced with adversity.”
Every Stroke is different and every recovery is different. Allison’s is a story of inspiration, love and hope, as well as, sharing lessons learned during devastating time.
All proceed from the cruise tickets benefit the Stroke Recovery Foundation. A 501(c)3 local charity, the Stroke Recovery Foundation assists Southwest Florida’s stroke survivors, particularly younger stroke survivors to maximize their recoveries by providing resource support, stroke recovery coaching and education and by funding needed therapy for economically challenged survivors.
